History
When J. Ware, III started Green Horizons Turf Farms more than twenty years ago, he was continuing a family history of farming in Jefferson County that spans at least seven generations and dates back more than 200 years. The rich soils of the Garden of the Shenandoah Valley, combined with unique growing practices, has gained the farm an unbeatable reputation amongst some of the region’s top golf courses, country clubs and prestigious landscaping firms.
J graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in Agricultural Business; where he focused his final semesters on turf management. But the learning didn’t stop there. J is continually researching and trying new seed varieties, growing methods and crop rotations to produce the best possible turfgrass sod. In addition to producing visually appealing, and resilient sod, he also strives to maintain the integrity of the soil and the land for generations to come.
Green Horizons is truly a labor of love for the entire family. After a 12 year career in the television news industry, J’s wife, Andrea, joined him full-time on the farm. And the couple’s two children, August and Edy, are a regular part of the daily farm operations.
